Introducing Software as a Service
SaaS and Software + Services
On the heels of Bill Gates' March 2 announcement about Microsoft Online Services
we're excited to announce our "new" portfolio of SaaS offerings! In addition we've highlighted upcoming Microsoft
product announcements, licensing updates, promotions and more!
Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) and Microsoft's Software+Service (S+S) offerings are gaining momentum. SaaS refers to hosted
software such as hosted email, hosted crm, etc. These flat-rate, subscription models allow companies to avoid: up-front
capital investments, delays in time to market, continuous maintenance and upgrades, and unpredictable costs. You will
soon start to see more online services that enable business productivity.
S+S from Microsoft is a unique combination of leveraging your existing infrastructure and exploiting the benefits of 'in
the cloud' services. Examples of this are an on-premise Exchange 2007 email infrastructure complimented with hosted
exchange services such as continuity. In the event your server is down for planned or unplanned maintenance, your email
continues to be captured and accessible.
En Pointe is pleased to announce that it is building a portfolio of SaaS offerings. By partnering with Microsoft and
other leading companies, we are able to offer a robust portfolio of hosted services. Over time, you will see this
portfolio expand. To see our current offering in SaaS, please visit
www.enpointe.com/saas or email saas@enpointe.com.

Microsoft to Expand Microsoft Online Services for Businesses of All Sizes |
Top |
Exchange Online and SharePoint Online enter beta
This announcement marks a significant step for Microsoft toward expanding its software plus services strategy.
"The combination of software plus services gives customers advanced choice and flexibility in how they access and manage software, "Gates said. "With Microsoft Online Services, businesses can deploy software as a subscription service, from servers they manage on-site, or a combination of the two, depending on their specific needs. In the future, customers and partners should expect to see this kind of choice and flexibility for all of Microsoft's software and server products." (Click here)
Today Microsoft also opened a limited beta trial of the new services; U.S.-based companies can register for the trial at
http://www.mosbeta.com. The new services are scheduled to be generally available to businesses of all sizes in the second half of the year. Based on the proven, business-class software available in Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 and Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007, the new services enable businesses to access e-mail, calendaring, contacts, shared workspaces, and webconferencing and videoconferencing over the Web. The new services are managed through a single Web-based interface, designed to meet the needs of IT professionals. Through this security-enhanced interface, IT professionals can monitor the performance of the services, add and configure users, submit and track support requests, and manage users and licenses. |

added April 1, 2008 as a Software Assurance (SA) entitlement for Office Communications Server 2007 (OCS) customers with active SA.
- Server Rights: Customers with Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 Standard Edition or Microsoft Office

Volume Activation 2.0 Extends to Windows Server 2008
|
Top |
Volume Activation 2.0 (VA 2.0), first implemented with Windows Vista Volume License (VL) editions, now applies to Windows Server 2008. VA 2.0 is
designed to automate and manage the activation process while addressing the piracy and product key management problems associated with VLKs issued
for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. VA 2.0 is very similar for Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista; however there are several changes for
Windows Server 2008 that are important for you.
Summary of Changes in VA 2.0 for Windows Server 2008
- Existing Windows Vista KMS Keys support activation of Windows Vista volume editions only
- Windows Vista KMS will not activate Windows Server 2008
- MAK and KMS Keys are grouped by server edition (see table below for details)
- To activate Windows Server 2008 using MAK, the corresponding group MAK key must be used
- (After Server RTM) the KMS host on Windows Server 2008 can activate both Windows Vista and other Windows Server 2008
editions (based on the KMS key)
- KMS activation minimum policy requires 5 KMS clients for Windows Server 2008 activation; 25
KMS clients are still required for Windows Vista activation. (see below for details on policy changes)
- VAMT and KMS for Windows Server 2003 will require an update when Windows Server 2008 is released
- Existing KMS host(s) will need to be activated with the new key(s)
Product Groupings
To simplify volume activation across the variety of Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 editions, Microsoft has introduced the concept of Volume
Edition Product Groups. KMS and MAK keys apply to product groups rather than being edition-specific. This greatly simplifies key management by
reducing the number of possible keys. The following table illustrates the Volume Product Groups, MAK and KMS keys, and the Windows volume editions
that can be activated by each.

Changes to KMS Policy
The KMS key is used to establish a local activation enablement service (the Key Management Service or KMS) that is hosted locally in your
environment. KMS activation requires a minimum number of physical machines before activation will occur. This is known as the KMS activation
threshold (also "n-count"). The KMS activation threshold policy for Windows Server 2008 is different than for Windows Vista.
- For a Windows Server 2008 client to activate: at least 5 physical KMS client machines. Can be Windows Server 2008 only or a
combination of Windows 2008 server and Windows Vista computers.
- For a Windows Vista client to activate: at least 25 physical KMS client machines. Can be Windows Vista computers only or a
combination of Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 computers.
- Virtual client machines: do not contribute to the count, although they will be activated once the activation threshold is met.
- KMS host machines: A physical or virtual KMS host does not contribute to the count.
Updated Documentation and Readiness Materials
The VA 2.0 materials produced for Windows Vista are being updated to include Windows Server 2008. A summary is below.
- Customer-ready core documentation set: the Step-by-Step Guide is now divided into several separate documents, plus a FAQ. They include best practices and guidance. These documents, updated for Windows Server 2008, are available on the Download Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=75674.
- Overview
- Planning Guide
- Deployment Guide
- Operations Guide
- Resources
- FAQ
- There is a new location for customer-ready Volume Activation content in the TechNet Library at www.microsoft.com/technet/volumeactivation. Content will be posted early February 2008 and will duplicate documentation in the Download Center.
- Microsoft Deployment aka D4 (i.e. BDD and WSD) references the updated VA 2.0 documentation and location vs. having separate VA 2.0 content.

Why Should I Deploy This?
Businesses today require broad access to corporate applications and data from a variety of mobile
and remote devices via the Internet-by employees, partners and customers. At the same time,
application-layer security threats continue to rise, exposing organizations to exploit and attack
from many different sources. Balancing the tensions between security, application functionality
and accessibility requires a flexible solution with rich application access, comprehensive
security and granular policy. Microsoft's secure remote access platform delivers support
for full application functionality to users on both managed and unmanaged devices, while providing
flexible options for enforcing and managing policy-based access and security.
Medium-size to enterprise customers
This solution is designed for organizations with typically 100 users and above who do not own a
remote access solution today or who are looking to upgrade older systems to enable:
- Application delivery to non-Windows or down-level clients.
- Application delivery to clients without necessary software installed locally.
- Access to confidential information that should never be stored locally (on the endpoint device).
- Application and data access over slow links.
- TCO investments to reduce deployment times drive server consolidation and reduce support costs.

each individual component included therein (reseller prices may vary).
Q: Is Microsoft Software Assurance available on this promotion?
A:
Yes, Software Assurance is available as part of this promotion.
Q:
(How) Can I upgrade to Windows Server 2008 or the next version of IAG when they release?
A:
By purchasing Software Assurance (for a period that covers the RTM of Windows Server 2008 or
other components), you will be entitled to upgrade to the next version(s) of the purchased
platform products.
Q: Do the server licenses come as part of the promotion?
A:
No, server software licenses and appliances are sold separately. Visit
http://www.microsoft.com/forefront/edgesecurity/howtobuy.mspx for complete details.

A:

only. Software Assurance is optional.
Q: Can I purchase Software Assurance benefits for just one of the components?
A: Yes, you can choose to purchase Software
Assurance benefits for just one of the components; however, you would need to purchase the

Q: Is there a limitation on the number of licenses you can purchase for the
promotion?
A: No. There is no limitation on the number of
licenses (CAL or EC) of Windows Server 2003 Terminal Services, SoftGrid Application
Virtualization for Terminal Services, or Intelligent Application Gateway 2007 that you can
purchase. However, the licenses need to be purchased in multiples of 100 (for example, 100,
200, 300 licenses, etc.).
Q: What does a “promotional” SKU mean? What do I physically
receive?
A: This promotional SKU consists of a
combination of license-only SKUs, priced at a discount, which you will be able to see
displayed in their license counts on the Microsoft Volume Licensing Services (MVLS) Web
site. Since this promotion is for either CALs or External Connector licenses only, no
media is needed (server software is sold separately).
Q: Is there an upgrade path from stand-alone versions of the included
products to the promotion?
A: No, this promotion does not include an
upgrade path from the stand-alone versions of the included products to the promotion. The
