Product Announcements

The Hot Buzz: Windows Server 2008 aka "Longhorn" Top
Microsoft Corp. gave details on a group of server and virtualization products due next year that will set the tone for how well the company will compete in the enterprise software market. It announced pricing and licensing details for Windows Server 2008, its long-awaited server product due for release in February, and revealed that the commercial name for its virtualization product will be Hyper-V, formerly known as Viridian. Microsoft is billing the official launch of Windows Server 2008, which will take place in Los Angeles on Feb. 27, as "the most important enterprise launch in company history." That launch will also showcase Visual Studio 2008, the company's application development tools, and SQL Server 2008, its database. Microsoft will release five versions of Windows Server in February: Standard, Enterprise, Datacenter, Web Server and a version for Itanium-based systems. Within six months of the Windows Server 2008 launch, it will also release Standard, Enterprise and Datacenter versions incorporating its Hyper-V virtualization software. Virtualization enables one physical server to host several operating systems, which can be assigned to run certain applications. As a result, one physical server can be worked harder, often reducing the need for more server hardware, which in turn brings benefits such as lower power bills for data centers. Microsoft will try to best VMware by providing management tools that allow, for example, an administrator to quickly deploy another virtual server if one is backlogged with tasks. Microsoft's virtualization tools will also allow a view into how the operating systems and applications are performing and allow modifications. Microsoft’s aim is to provide a more comprehensive strategy around how to manage and utilize server deployment. Pricing for Windows Server 2008 will be no more than 1% higher than for Windows Server 2003, the company said. The following are estimated retail prices are for a one-off purchase of a perpetual license:
  • Windows Server 2008 Standard without Hyper-V: $971 (with five client-access licenses, or CALs)
  • Windows Server 2008 Enterprise without Hyper-V: $3,971 (with 25 CALs)
  • Windows Server 2008 Datacenter without Hyper-V: $2,971 (per processor)
  • Windows Server 2008 for Itanium-based Systems: $2,999 (per processor)
  • Windows Web Server 2008: $469
When the versions incorporating its Hyper-V virtualization technology become available, they will be priced as follows:
  • Windows Server 2008 Standard: $999 (with five CALs)
  • Windows Server 2008 Enterprise: $3,999 (with 25 CALs)
  • Windows Server 2008 Datacenter: $2,999 (per processor)
Microsoft will also release a stand-alone hypervisor for running other operating systems, called Hyper-V Server, priced at $28 regardless of the number of processors. "If you have a machine that doesn't have Windows at all, then you would buy that in order to run instances of say Linux or Sun."

Visual Studio Team Foundation Server CAL Licensing requirements
The following updates the CAL requirements for Team Foundation Server including a clarification on the multiplexing use rights.

1) Licensing Changes in Team Foundation Server / CAL 2008
Microsoft has made one licensing change in the Team Foundation Server CAL (TFS CAL) requirement with the release of VSTS 2008. The change is as follows: You do not need a CAL to access work item tracking functionality, to create new work items or view and update work items you opened.

You may do the following:
  • Open a new work item of any type within the system.
  • This CAL licensing exception is limited to bug filing scenarios only. The goal is to allow organizations to allow bug / issue/ defect submission for the users of an application.
  • Access to work items opened only by you. You cannot view or access a work item opened by anyone else unless you have a TFS CAL.
  • Edit any work item you opened to clarify the original entry, change work item fields, or make annotations to the discussion of the opened work item. You cannot resolve, close or change the work item state in any way unless you have a TFS CAL.

The change will only apply to TFS 2005 when customers are exercising downgrade rights from TFS 2008. TFS 2005 customers that purchased Software Assurance with their licenses will be able to apply this new licensing exception to their 2005 version.

2) Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Team Foundation Server Multiplexing Licensing Requirements
Multiplexing does not reduce the number of Microsoft licenses required. End users are required to have the appropriate licenses, regardless of their direct or indirect connection to the product. Any user or device that accesses the server, files, or data or content provided by the server that is made available through an automated process requires a CAL.
Certain circumstances do not require CALs, and they are detailed below:

Team Foundation Server CAL Requirements
Any user or device that accesses the server, files, data, content or deploys files, content, or data provided by the server in automated process (e.g. directly from a server or automatically posted to a server) requires a CAL. Any device or user that accesses data from TFS through a multiplexed device or server also requires a CAL. Accessing data from TFS is defined as creating, reading or editing data that was made available on the multiplexed device in an automated way.

There are 2 circumstances under which CALs are not required:
  • Manual intervention – a CAL is not required for users and/or devices accessing files, data or content as a result of manual activity (e.g., a person uploading a file onto a server or e-mailing the file from the server to others).
  • Multiplexed users/devices not accessing TFS information – a CAL is not required for users and/or devices on multiplexed devices that do not access data, files or content from TFS in an automated way. In other words, you do not need a CAL simply for being a user on the multiplexed device, but you do need a CAL if you are on the multiplexed device and you access TFS data directly or indirectly in anyway.
These situations are further explained in the examples below:

Example 1
Scenario: an automated process is set up that uploads status reports and files from TFS to another server for viewing by the CIO and other stakeholders.
License requirement: a TFS CAL is required for each person accessing the reports and/or information posted to the TFS server.

Example 2
Scenario: an automated process is set up to synchronize TFS version control data with another source code management system. A developer on the other source code management system utilizes the TFS version control data in one of his/her active projects.
License requirement: a CAL is required for each user/device accessing TFS data on a multiplexed system. Even though the user/device is not accessing TFS directly, a CAL is required since the user/device is utilizing TFS functionality, data, information or content through the multiplexed system.

Example 3
Scenario: an automated process is set up to synchronize TFS version control data with another source code management system. A developer, on the other source code management system, works with several projects that do not utilize the TFS data, information or content.
License requirement: a CAL is not required for users/devices on the multiplexed system that do not access or utilize TFS data, information or content in any fashion.

Note: version control is used in the scenarios above but it could be any TFS functionality, information, data or content.

Microsoft® Office PerformancePoint™ Server 2007 Top
Microsoft® Office PerformancePoint™ Server 2007 became available in Volume Licensing on November 1, 2007. Office PerformancePoint Server 2007 is a complete performance management application providing scorecarding, analytics and planning for enterprise and mid-market customers. Office PerformancePoint Server 2007 will be licensed using a single server and client access license (CAL) model. A single external connector license will also be available for extranet applications.

Details regarding licensing for Office PerformancePoint Server 2007 are as follows:
  • Microsoft ProClarity® Analytics Server 6.3 will become a component of Office PerformancePoint Server 2007. Deployment of Office PerformancePoint Server 2007 may include the installation of ProClarity Analytics Server 6.3 on a single server under a single license. Additional servers require additional Office PerformancePoint Server 2007 server licenses. The Office PerformancePoint Server 2007 CALs will be able to access all of the instances and servers.
  • ProClarity Desktop Professional 6.3 will remain available as a separately licensed application. Customers who license ProClarity Desktop Professional 6.3 will be deemed to have one ProClarity Analytics Server 6.3 CAL, allowing the user to work with either the Office PerformancePoint Server 2007 or ProClarity Analytics Server 6.3 products.
  • Functionality similar to that of Business Scorecard Manager 2005 will be included in Office PerformancePoint Server 2007. However, the Office PerformancePoint Server 2007 license will accommodate a downgrade to Business Scorecard Manager Server 2005.
  • Deploying Office PerformancePoint Server 2007 web parts can be done via Windows SharePoint Services or Microsoft Office SharePoint Server. For every server where you install Office PerformancePoint Server 2007, you must obtain a server license. Each user that is viewing and/or interacting with Office PerformancePoint Server 2007 web parts hosted on either Windows SharePoint Services or Office SharePoint Server requires an Office PerformancePoint Server 2007 CAL. Use of Microsoft Office SharePoint Server also requires a SharePoint E-CAL (Standard plus Enterprise CAL).
ProClarity and Business Scorecard Manager customers who are current on maintenance or who have purchased software assurance will be entitled to exchange their licenses for Office PerformancePoint Server 2007 licenses.
  • ProClarity customers will be entitled to exchange one ProClarity Analytics Server 6.3 license for one Office PerformancePoint Server 2007 license at no additional cost. They will also be entitled to exchange one ProClarity Analytics Server CAL, one ProClarity Web CAL or one ProClarity Desktop Professional license for one Office PerformancePoint Server 2007 CAL license at no additional cost. Concurrent ProClarity user licenses may be exchanged for three times that amount of PerformancePoint Server 2007 CALs.
  • Business Scorecard Manager 2005 customers will be entitled to exchange one Business Scorecard Manager 2005 Server license for one Office PerformancePoint Server 2007 license at no additional cost. They will also be entitled to exchange one Business Scorecard Manager 2005 CAL for one Office PerformancePoint Server 2007 CAL license at no additional cost and one Business Scorecard Manager 2005 External Connector license for one Office PerformancePoint Server 2007 External Connector license.

Standard, Enterprise, and Datacenter •Offering optional editions built without Microsoft Hyper-V hypervisor
•Same License as their ragular counterparts
•Priced slightly lower than their ragular counterparts
Provider customers the choice of deploying Windows Server 2008 without the Hyper-V technology. Customers will need to saperately license the hypervisor technology, whether it is Microsoft's Hyper-V, Microsoft's Virtual Server R2, or a third party hypervisor technology.
Windows Web Server 2008 •Use only for front-end web serving internet accessible web pages, web sites, web applications, web services and POP3 mail services.
•Now can run any type of database software licenced to support any number of users.
•Further distinguish Web Server 2008 from windows server 2008 Standard.
•There is a strong need for a single-server web solution (web server + database) to compete with LAMP solutions.
New Windows Server 2008 for Itanium Based System SKU •Same License terms as datacenter
•Only support databases, line of business and custom applications. All Services functions not reqired to support these 3 target workloads are removed.
•Same Price as datacenter.
Designed to be the leading alternative platform for RISC-based UNIX servers.
Intended for scale-up database workloads and custom and line-of-business applications. This workload focus is consistent with the majority of current deployments of Windows Server on Itanium.

Windows Server 2008 Standard Top
A customer licensed with Windows Server 2008 Standard now may run one instance of the server software in the physical operating system environment and one instance of the server software in a virtual operating system environment. This further enables virtualization of the software for Standard edition.

"Without Hyper-V" licenses
Although the new Hyper-V™ hypervisor technology is a key feature of the Windows Server 2008 core operating system, Microsoft will still provide customers the choice of deploying Windows Server 2008 without this technology. Microsoft will enable this by offering Windows Server 2008 Standard, Enterprise, and Datacenter licenses without Hyper-V™ at a slightly reduced price from their regular license counterparts. The licensing terms are exactly the same as their Standard, Enterprise, and Datacenter edition counterparts, including the virtualization use rights. With Windows Server 2008 Standard, Enterprise, and Datacenter licenses without Hyper-V™, a customer will need to separately license the hypervisor technology, whether it is Hyper-V™, Microsoft’s Virtual Server R2, or a third party hypervisor technology.

Windows Web Server 2008 Top
Windows Web Server 2008 licensing is enhanced to allow any type of database engine software with no limit on the number of users. Licensing terms for Windows Web Server also further clarify that the software may be used solely as a front-end web server for development and deployment of Internet-accessible Web pages, Web sites, Web applications, Web services and POP3 mail serving.

Windows Server 2008 for Itanium-Based Systems Top
Windows Server 2008 for Itanium-based Systems now is a separate Windows Server 2008 product and not merely an Itanium platform selection (as in the previous Windows Server 2003 version). It is targeted at customers using the Itanium platform and designed for specific workloads.
